Vacation time from work is a sought after blessing many of us Americans eagerly anticipate using each year. We endure the multiple forty-plus hour long work week with an eye to that time when we can leave work behind for a week or two and just get away from it all, relax, enjoy our families or seek out extended entertainment. We LOVE vacation!
During two weeks this past July our family spent our vacation time with some people from our church. We flew together to Ghana, West Africa where we served, lived, ate, worshipped, rejoiced, cried, and grew together. People “gave up” their vacation time to have this short-term mission trip experience together. Why would anyone give up something as precious as vacation time?
I think we can sum it up in one Biblical verse –
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
This team desired to use their vacation time to the glory of God. The purpose of each person was to glorify God in any way they could. God received glory as the King he is, the redeeming savior he is, the loving father he is, the one who truly cares that he is, the giver and sustainer of life and all things that he is. People gave up their precious vacation time to give God glory.
God received glory as we loved on, cared for, and encouraged orphans and children in need. He received glory as people we met shared with us their daily struggles just to survive. He received glory as we served our mission partners by planting fruit trees, cultivating a garden and planting seeds in the garden for them to have food to live on. He received glory when we shared who Jesus is in our lives and how He longs to be their savior too. He received glory as we heard testimonies how God miraculously saved people out of destructive life styles and turned them to himself.
Don’t misunderstand me. I love a good vacation as much as the next person. But understand that even something as precious to us as our time off from work can be used to bring glory to God. – So, whether you vacation or work, or whatever you do, do ALL to THE GLORY of God. He receives the glory and you’ll be blessed in ways you never imagined!
